Rihanna has topped the UK singles chart with Diamonds
The Barbadian star knocked last week's number one, Gangnam Style by rapper Psy, to number two.
Mid-week sales predicted it would be a straight fight between Rihanna and One Direction for chart supremacy, but the boy band's song Live While We're Young entered in third place.
Adele's new single, the Bond theme Skyfall, is likely to challenge for top spot next week after entering the chart at number four despite only going on sale on Friday.
Another new entry, Ellie Goulding, landed her sixth Top 40 hit with Anything Could Happen going in at number five.
Meanwhile, Muse chalked up their fourth number one album with The 2nd Law.
Folk four-piece Mumford And Sons dropped to second place in the albums chart with their release Babel.
US singer Pink maintained her grip on third place with The Truth About Love, while Battle Born by Las Vegas-based band The Killers was also a non-mover at four.
Emeli Sande climbed two places to five with Our Version Of Events, while vocal harmony group The Overtones had the second-highest new entry with Higher going in at number six.
