Official photos of the LG BL40 - Technical Markus goes all drooly

It’s not very often that I go all squiffy over a non-smartphone, but the LG BL40 (note the correct spelling of its name; previous reports had called it the LB40, which it now turns out isn’t its name), the phone that one reader here has said looks like a TV remote control (which, I have to agree, it does, a bit), has done just that.

Well, LG have finally unveiled official photos of it, and yes, they’ve reinforced my opinion of it.LG BL40 New Chocolate

Yes, I reckon it’s smurfing gorgeous. I mean look at it, it’s all sexy and shiny and everything. But then, that’s not really a surprise, since LG are good at shiny. Between LG and Samsung, South Korea is responsible for about, ooh, 90% of the best looking phones on the market, I reckon. They just seem to have this spider sense about what makes phones look cool. I mean just look at the LG Viewty Smart or, from the competition, the Samsung i8910 HD

South Korea is to mobile phones what Italy is to cars (and if I need to spell out why, just consider these names: Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Fiat, Pininfarina, Zagato, do I really need to go on?)…

Oh, and then, of course, there’s the other reason I find it so exciting, despite it not being a smartphone. That screen. All 4 inches of it. With its 21:9 aspect ratio. And if you’ve forgotten why that excites me, I’ll reiterate:

Widescreen TVs have an aspect ratio of 16:9. Cinema screens, however, have an aspect ratio of 21:9 (well, more or less). The LG BL40 has an aspect ratio of 21:9. That screen, right there, is in Cinemascope. And LG want to launch their own app store. Is it too much to wonder whether LG will also offer full movie downloads, in the original aspect ratio?

While the LG Viewty Smart is doing its turn as their head-turningly-gorgeous-camera-phone, is the LG BL40 going to be their head-turningly-gorgeous-movie-watching-type-phone?

We shall see, but I say again, this is the first non-smartphone in ages that’s made me go all fangirl-ish (and I’m not even a girl!)…
